Introduction

“In New Orleans, people aged 60 and older comprised 15 percent of the population prior to Hurricane Katrina. However, more than 70 percent of those who died as a result of the hurricane were elderly” (source).

This is disparity is due to a system of factors working against senior citizens, including: lack of access to transportation, increased medical needs, decreased social networks, and lower incomes.

AXIS for Natural Disasters, partnered with CEMA, rethinks the entire end-to-end experience of evacuation, beginning with a simple wristband for at-risk senior citizens.
